REDEFINING THE AGRICULTURE SYSTEM
Vana is an agri-management platform working with small scale farmers in emerging economies to boost productivity and financial returns.
"Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of man."
- George Washington
In Asia and Africa, millions of small-scale and subsistence farmers often work with unsustainable, traditional farming methods, lack of up-to-date knowledge and limited finances. At the same time, other farms consisting of large plots of land are able to benefit from pooled resources and take advantage of improved technology, such as fertilisers and machinery, to boost productivity and lower costs. This has resulted in the “agricultural treadmill” whereby smallholder families and subsistence farmers are increasingly suffering.
Vana Global was founded in 2016 with the aim of reinventing agriculture for the 21st century to end the hardship these small-scale farmers continue to face. Vana uses a combination of global financing and technology, which is invested in small-scale farmers in emerging economies to boost productivity and financial returns.
Our business is shaped by our core values which aim to better the lives of all of our farmers and their families. We provide an integrated platform to empower smallholder farmers to become self-sufficient business owners. Through sharing knowledge, technology and finance, we are helping to create an infinite number of opportunities for our farmers across Africa and Asia. By doing so we are fostering inclusive growth by increasing yields and profits.
TO INCREASE THE INCOME AND PROFITABILITY OF FARMERS
Small-scale farmers are struggling to compete with the prices and productivity of large-scale farms, this is leading to the agricultural treadmill.
Through providing farmers with improved knowledge and technology, they will be able to increase productivity, crop yields and quality - thereby leading to higher profits.
TO EMPOWER WOMEN TO WORK WITHIN AGRICULTURE
Although women make up half of the agricultural workforce in many emerging economies, their ability to prosper is limited by barriers to finance, knowledge and resources.
At Vana we believe that women are vital to unlocking potential in global agriculture to feed more hungry people across the world. At the same time, they are more likely to reinvest income back into their families to improve education and health. This is why we want to empower more women into agriculture so that everyone can benefit.
TO ATTRACT MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO FARMING BY CULTIVATING 'AGRIPRENEURS'
Fewer and fewer young people are working in the agriculture sector, as they leave rural areas to seek opportunities elsewhere. This leads to the question - who will continue to feed the world?
Vana provides young people with new and exciting opportunities to become self-sufficient business owners.
TO MAKE FARMERS MORE TECHNOLOGY SAVVY
Climate change, crop failures and food shortages across the world are plaguing farmers. Although science is helping to reverse this trend in developed countries, small-scale farmers across Asia and Africa rarely have access to such resources.
Vana provides farmers with the tools and technologies they desperately need to adapt to these challenges.
TO REINVENT THE WAY FARMERS ARE PERCEIVED IN THE WORLD
As the world has pivoted towards an industrial and service-led economy, the public perception of agriculture has steadily declined. Yet, agriculture is fundamental to the continuation of mankind.
By 2050, the world needs to double its food production in order to sustain the growing global population. Vana has recognised this need and therefore on a mission to change the perception of agriculture.
Farmers begin by visiting the Vana Centre with ID and land documentation. Our customer executives explain the entire process to the farmer and register them as a Vana farmer.
The farmer is then requested to submit soil samples, which we then analyse in order to provide our expertise and scientific help. The analysis provides recommendations to the farmer of which crop to grow.
After the farmer has decided which one to grow, the Vana truck will supply the farmer with the Vana kit which will include: seeds, biofertilizers, biopesticides, knapsacks, poly bags, irrigation systems etc. Instructions will also be provided on sowing seeds, setting up irrigation and then on an ongoing basis by phone. We at Vana are keen to ensure that scientifically-proven practices are followed and therefore our Vana supervisor will be on hand to provide any assistance and review crop growth.
Post-harvest, the produce is evaluated by the supervisor and a balance sheet is calculated. The benefits are shared by all so that both Vana and the farmer can grow, flourish and change the face of agriculture as it is known today.
The Vana Centre lies at the heart of each of our farming communities. A state of the art business park, the Vana Centre incorporates the farmer registration desk, research labs, learning theatres, retail stores and the Vana Co-operative farm. Each Vana Centre is designed to manage 10,000 local farmers. Throughout each season, the Centre's research team will offer timely advice on seeds, planting, application, harvesting and storage. Vana's ambitious plan is to build 21 Vana Centres across the world over the next four years.
VANA FARMER ONBOARDING
"I have very recently ventured into agriculture. At the beginning, I was having a small doubt, whether I can do it or not. Now, after Vana has involved in this, I am more confident. I am very excited to be with Vana. They are coming up with new ideas, which other farmers do not know yet."
Uthiya Kumar - Malaysia
"I have complete faith in vana. I am doing whatever they are suggesting. Because of them I understood that farming is not very difficult and that one person cultivate an acre on his own. Now I come everyday in the morning and follow the routine suggested by Vana. "
Kaviarasan - Malaysia
"This is the first time I stepped into agriculture. I was scared to venture into agriculture because I did not know what to do, when to do and how to do. But now that vana has come, and I have become a farmer partner, I feel really confident that I can do well in agriculture."
Mathialagan - Malaysia
